ICELAND

A country of ice and hot steam.

Our journey started in Luxembourg and went on to - Iceland - New York - Toronto end of April 1973. Some of our Iceland experience was by tour bus and plane. While we were at Reykjavik we found out that there was an enormous volcanic eruption on a small Island southeast of Iceland. We tried to get on a plane to this Island, but all travel to this spot was "off limits". By chance we got to know two Photographers of a very well known US Publication. (TL). They were hiring a private plane to take pictures of the eruption. After our pleading, they gave in and we were able to go along. The pilot told us right at the beginning that there was no chance to land on the island of HEIMAEY as only Police, Military and Fire department personnel was allowed there. We circled the island several times. These photographers convinced the pilot that a quick landing would be appreciated. So he did. However, when we came to a stop, a very irate police detachment told us in no uncertain terms to leave or else. We did, firstly because of the stones and ash flying through the air and secondly the pilot would have lost his license. It was reported in the International press that several Nations around the world and in particular the USA sent huge pumps to the island to prevent the harbour from being closed. The second picture from the left, of the third row from the top, was taken at midnight at Reykjavik.
