This situation was enlarged toward the general population as well. During the year of 909 A.D. a book was written by Abbot "Regino" of Pruem at the request of Bishop Rathbod of Trier which outlined specific restrictions for misconduct. I am now quoting in the original language:
The Church prevented the Clergy from marrying, and one of the many reasons was to prevent them from having children. Archbishop Johann of Tours, declared in London in the year of 1278 A.D. that "no Cleric within the Catholic Church is allowed to leave any monetary values in their last will and testament toward their sons and/or concubine. All bequests were to be dedicated to the Church."
It is unbelievable, that the teachings of Jesus, could lead to the most repulsive behavior of the Priests. Being deprived of female companionship they were looking for an outlet of their frustrations in ways which are hard to describe. However, the Bishops are really to blame for the disgraceful conduct of the entire lot , Priests and Monks. The miserliness and arrogance of those in command were part of the whole mess. If the Priests and Monks were in low esteem by the general public, the Bishops were even more despised. Basilius wrote to Bishop Eusebius of Samosata:"In 528 It has come to the point where the lowest of individuals are sitting in the Bishop chairs." This same Bishop wrote 32 letters to all other Bishops in France and Italy, lamenting about the shameful conduct of the Bishops and Heads of the Church. He commented: "The disenchantment of the public with the Church is such, that many people in many cities no longer visit churches, but rather go outside of the city to pray under the open Sky." One of the foremost and outspoken critics of the miserable Church situation were Gregor von Nazianz, Chyrostomus and Cyrill of Jerusalem who spoke out against the low morality of the Cleric. The reputation of the Priests and Monks were so bad, that in some districts Priests and Monks were not allowed to visit any females alone.
In 528 A.D. another ruling by Justinian: " To follow the road of the Apostles, when a new Bishop is to be elected, it is to be done by the populace at large, by selecting from the three most worthy , a decent human being." In the order of 531 A.D. it was announced: "No one can be elevated to the office of Bishop if he is married and/or has children." At the same time the Bishops were under strict order that they must leave all their worldly possessions (which were accumulated during their office) to the Church. More and more rules and regulations were instigated with little result. At the Synod of 751 it was decreed that any Priest who is involved in sexual activity will be imprisoned after he has been subjected to flogging and whiplashes.
Ratherius of Verona wrote to beginning of the 10. Century: Among the whole bunch of "Kopfgeschorenen" (baldheaded) there is not one which is not an adulterer or a Sodomite. (All monks have their head shorn!)
Pope Nikolaus I remarked :" It does not matter how dirty, blemished or impure a Priest conducts himself, he can not soil the holy sacraments!!".However, the Popes at that time hardly were any inspiration for clean, Christ like living. They themselves were the scum of the earth. To give you an example how bad things were - Cardinal Petrus Damiani had great influence over his contemporaries. He devoted himself to Celibacy, but did nothing for the betterment of the Priests. He was born in 1002 in Ravenna. He committed himself at an early age to the Church and in 1058 was appointed Cardinal bishop of Ostia. Shortly after that, he became disillusioned with the corruption of the Church and the clergy. He resigned and went into a monastery where he died in 1069.In his writings he described the terrible low life of the Priests and Monks. He called them Whores, sodomites, sex with animals, sex among themselves etc. etc. He uses every word any encyclopedia has to show in regard to "Vulgarity."
In spite of all this, Pope Gregor VII insisting on Celibacy, he and his administration received a lot of resistance. Many were just not willing to go along with this crazy Church Law. When Bishop Altmann of Passay read the order of the Pope from his pulpit, he was nearly killed by the local Priests. Bishop Heinrich von Chur nearly lost his life when he imposed celibacy in his district. Archbishop Johann von Rouen , at a Synod, reading the articles of the Pope's legal bull, was stoned and had to leave in a hurry. In England the Church had the same problems, but the English Church had a more modern outlook. A Church Officer said : " You can remove the women from the Priests, but you can't remove the Priests from the women!."
The moral of the Catholic Church in England was much worse then anywhere else, (if this was possible). The debauchery among the Cleric was incredible. It was even too much for the Pope, who in 1125 at the Synod to London officially put the law down. He decreed that any Priest found to be in female company (living together) will be immediately removed from the Priesthood. Cardinal Johann von Crema, who was the author of this infamous degree, was caught the same evening with a "lady of the Night".
Bishop Ranulph of Durham, otherwise known as the "Flambard" was possibly the worst slipshod in the World. He lived like a Sultan of Turkey, the nicest girls, the best food, always plenty of money, while all along plundering his Parish members. He came to the attention of the Pope, who sent his representative to London to confront "Flambard" at the Synod. But, "Flambard" did not trust the situation and decided to stay away. Cardinal Johann decided to see for himself and went to inspect the situation. Ranulph knew how to impress the Delegate of the Pope. He wined and dined him, making sure that he had a beautiful, young female at his side. This lady, who was instructed by Flambard, got the Cardinal to join her in bed. As soon as the Cardinal was involved in something that comes natural, the Bishop assembled his staff, Priests, Monks and other Clerics and lead a procession into the Bedroom. The delegate of the Pope inquired if this was an "honor to St. Peter". He was told that this is a ceremony for newly weds. He had the choice to drink to this occasion or have a drink which would transport him into heaven. He accepted the first offer and after that the Bishop Ranulph had no longer any problems with Rome.
In France, the situation was not much better. As an example: Archbishop of Besancon was a regular criminal. In order to satisfy his greed he sold everything to everyone. He even looted his own Priests. They had to walk around dressed worse than farmers. Nuns and Cleric's could get married if they paid enough money to him. He himself lived with a relative of his, the abbess of Reaumair Mont, had a child by another Nun and at the same time pleasured the daughter of one of his Priests. All his Priests had the same privileges.
The Archbishop of Bordeaux actually was the head of a gang of thieves and robbers. One evening this holy Bishop , in company of several female sluts and male gangsters, he entered the abbey of the "Holy Eparchius", stayed there for 3 days, plundering everything the abbey had to offer. His many criminal acts are of such nature that even Pope Innocence III. was greatly offended. The Pope wrote: "His other crimes are of such nature that my sense of Shame forbid me to mention them."
A certain Monk-Priest had an affair with a female. She got pregnant. He physically treated her harshly with the result of an miscarriage. This matter was brought to the attention of Pope Innocence III. He decreed:"since the miscarriage was not a living being, the Monk can continue his Altar Service." The times were such that it was less risky for a woman to enter the cage of an ape than to get in contact with a cleric. Because of their lazyness, day and night, they had nothing on their mind but fantasies of voluptuous pictures and to satisfy their lewd urges.
Under Henry VI, the Cleric in England petitioned for leniency in regard to criminal sexual misconduct.
In Basel, during the year of 1297 a Cleric raped a virgin girl. The outrage among the population was so great that he was castrated and his corpus delicti was placed in a prominent public place in the city.
In Venice a Augustin Monk raped an 11 year old girl, the citizens of Brescia made short order of him, he was ripped into four parts!
In 1212 a council decreed that Monks can not sleep in the same bed and commit sodomy.
Sodomy was so wide practiced that it was common knowledge. In 1409 four Priests were hung up in a cage and were let to die of hunger. Their crime? They sodomized a young boy.
One of the more notorious cleric was Bishop Henry von Luettich, who openly admitted that he had a mistress who was an abbess. He had in his garden a sizeable harem. He produced 14 sons in 22 months! (truly a wonderful Christian Priest).
Under these circumstances, the lesser evil was to let these Priests/Monks have their steady girl/boyfriends, instead of these monsters forcing themselves on decent woman and children.
